DAY IN THE LIFE OF A COUNTRY BUMPKIN

A day in the life of a Country Bumpkin

Our rural location, access to green space and wildlife enables children to benefit from as much time as possible outside.

There is lots of countryside to explore, and our large safe garden with both grass and patio enables children to engage in all types of outdoor play which includes picnics, sand pit, ball pit, slide, and adventures.

Visits are made to parks in Underwood and Brinsley, as well as playgroups such as Little Angels at St Michaels and All Angels Church.

Children learn through play and the activities that are undertaken by children include baking/cooking, painting, messy play, reading, puzzles, bricks, lego, sand pit, trains and cars.

Ideas for Family Days Out

As Country Bumpkins provides childcare for children of early years, a few of which are to new parents, I thought I would dedicate the remainder of this page to family friendly venues we have visited at weekends and which would be of interest to new parents looking for ideas for family days out. Please note we do not visit these venues during the week.

Sherwood Pines – NG21 9JL
Set in Sherwood forest, Sherwood Pines seems to be a superior experience of Sherwood forest with an abundance of mountain bike trials, activities such as the Gruffalo trail and bushcraft, childrens park, den building, BBQ area and café. It is a great place for younger and older children. This is a very family friendly place to visit and we enjoy it every time we visit. Car parking is £2 for the first hour, £4 up to 2 hours and £6 all day. Card machines available in certain locations meaning you don’t need to carry correct change. Wheelchair / buggy friendly.

Wollaton Hall, Gardens and Deerpark – NG8 2AE
Wollaton park is set in the village of Wollaton on the outskirts of Nottingham and offers a lot in one location. There is an extensive childrens park, large lawn area, paved walks around the lake, Café, toilets and free roaming deer. You can often see deer grazing and get close enough to get a good picture but be careful in rutting season as they can turn a little aggressive if you get too close. The Hall is also a museum and interesting to children but the park is the main attraction. Wollaton park hosts interesting events such as Science in the park (great for all ages- even if very young children can’t take part they can see some interesting experiments), and participates in the summer nights outdoor screenings during August. Change is required for car park.

Carsington Reservoir– DE6 1ST

Carsington Reservoir is located in Ashbourne, and a great family day out. There are lots of activities and facilities such as adventure playground, boat hire, biking, walking, lawn area and café with toilets. The walk around the lake takes a few hours but is great if you take a picnic.

Ladybower Reservoir– S33 0AX
Ladybower is a large reservoir located in the peak district, with dams separating  parts with walks around the outside. It is a little large to try and walk completely around and so is good for walking up and down in parts. There is a café, duck pond and toilets however no park. Paths are hilly, paved but in parts can be uneven. Fantastic setting, woods and scenery especially during winter and spring when the water flows over the dam.

Linacre Reservoir – S42 7JN
Linacre reservoir is a set of three reservoirs and has walks through wooded areas, and as you can cross each reservoir you can make the walk as long or as short as you like. The paths are mostly firm but hilly at times but again a great place to visit. There are toilets, but no shops or café but at times there is an ice cream van in the carpark. Car parking £1 for two hours or £2.50 for all day. Cash only.

Treetops Activity Centre DE55 4BR
A great activity centre and one of the best we have been to. Large indoor play area for young ages, with slides, ropes, trampoline and small football area. A great place to visit if the weather is adverse. Always seems to be busy at weekends.
